I mean we do have the guards on our side...

On the other hand, what are we supposed to do? I doubt they'll let us stroll through the gate...

 

I have a few times made you fight things, like in the swamp, but think.

The cultist and dragons did not attack you until one of you did something toward him

The wisps did not fight you until you attacked them

I am not FORCING you to fight stuff. If you think you could have charmed the owlbear into giving the flower you could have done that. I want you to explore your own methods.

If that includes fighting and army of ghouls, so be it

Why not? The guards on the East gate did. And all you were doing was going for a swamp walk, they can't expect everyone nearby to help fight off undead

Erevan: "Even if we could lure them close together, I'm not strong enough to kill them all with a single spell... and standing too close to a large mob of ghouls is pretty much suicide... in short, we may be screwed, unless we can come up with something, and quickly...

Here are our options, as far as I've figured (so far)...

A. Fight them, and probably die.
B. Make a dash for the gate, and hope we aren't torn apart by opportunity attacks.
C. Try and sneak away to another gate.
D. Do nothing and see how the guards handle it.
E. ???

While I, as a wood elf, could make it to the city without provoking any AoOs, the rest of you wouldn't be quite so lucky...

It's me who move your character habitually, but I was at school ! :p

 

Just to confirm how bad an idea fighting them is, this encounter calculator considers this to be a basically unsurvivable encounter, unless the guards bring in some major reinforcements...
