Is there a general rule of thumb where to put skill points you get for leveling? I'm a level 40 archer and I basically can't let a mob touch me or I'll die almost instantly. I have 20 in defense and 49 in agility, since my bow does air damage.

No, it all depends on your build.

Although, one rule would be; don't split your skill points evenly.

Unless you're using a build which utilizes all 5 elements, and/or if you want to use Gravity.

Your skill points will depend on how you want to play. Generally:
Strength - slow consistant melee damage
Dexterity - fast inconsistant melee damage
    Intelligence - Spell damage
    Defense - HP and regen
    Agility - Speed

Also if you die in one hit to mobs at your level it means you should get better gear.
