"I'm not that stupid, sorry." Ruby grumbles, letting go. "The thing is, you're a mortal and I don't dream of your slow and painful demise. That's saying something for me."

 

"But also,"
I say, cheerier,
"It's a big deal in the sense of who we are. For example, a killbot breaking free of his shackles and learning to not just listen to orders. It's pretty nice to look at progression, isn't it?"

 

"I'm a Shadow, Ruby, I don't die from age." I say, mildly annoyed.

 

"Neither do robots, but you don't seal." She retorts.

"It's a good way to be exiled even more. Bios fear that resolve, you know." He sighs.

 

I sigh.

"I just don't care anymore." I say, ignoring Ruby.

 

"Then you're not like bios. You didn't."

 

"You're no god, I know that much." She says telepathically before her presence vanishes.

"Clearly. Self-preservation is a thing in my programming."

 

I simply ignore Ruby, walking back over to my team.

 

Ihra glances at you.
"She's pissed."

 

"I seriously do not give a single flying fuck anymore." I say, clearly fed up with talking to Ruby.

 

Ihra smirks.
"Figured. Guess that means we get a move on." She says, staff crystal glowing ominously.

 

"Yeah, if you're done checking around with everyone to make sure they're happy and ready to battle. Christ knows if I have the energy to be more social than 'Hi, let me murder you'." I say, exhausted from putting up with Ruby.

 

"Well, you'd have to murder quite a few. I hope you didn't lose my pendant, lest someone infuses Xlentia with other magics such as light." Ihra says, seeming deeper in thought than usual. "That aside, we can arrive in the garden. There's no palace map, but Ruby snagged a crudely made etching that she's in theory giving to me soon."

 

"Pendant?" I ask.

 

"Huh, that's funny, actually."
I ponder.

 

Ihra pauses.
"Maybe I forgot to. Guess I just lost it, then. Sorry." She sighs, a bit frustrated with herself.

"How is a bio instinct programmed into me funny?" Iruk asks.

 

"Not instinct specifically, but survival instinct. Not that it's bad, I'm happy that you're here, right now, but it just seems strange to me that the thing making many of your kind would implement something like that."

 

"Either I've forgotten about it and its in my pocket-dimensional storage, or you never gave me a pendant." I say, slightly empathetic for Ihra.

 

"You know, there's a reason my people use the term Mecha. Robots originally were just those who managed to get wounded badly enough to replace a limb, then that slowly became sentient bodies able to survive toxins and such. Now, there's just one big umbrella term."

"Well... at least you can still fight without it. I was just worried they'd figure out shadows are weak to light, and... you know."

 

"Wow, they're really stupid." I say, shocked.
