This is an AMA too, so here are some questions about Israel that I got while watching Ethan&Hila's vlogs from Tel Aviv:
They showed off some graffiti/street art, and you make graffitis yourself. In Germany, this is highly illegal. What is the status in Israel?
Most people don't wear a kippa/hat or a beard, and apparently you can even get bacon in some restaurants. So apparently orthodox jews are a minority even in Israel. What are the average person's views towards religion? Are most people relaxed about it like in european countries?
In the Youtube comments, some people claim that Israel is stolen land. What do they mean by this and what is your opinion about it and about these people?

Technically it is illegal and falls under destruction of property.
But if the graffiti is particularly pretty or conveys a strong message people won't mind it.
Also most people including myself do graffiti on bare concrete or building site fences.

We do that as it makes the fence/concrete prettier while it isnt permanent.

First you need to understand israels demography, we have around 2 million orthodox jews, 2 million arabs (muslim and Christian combined), and 4 million jews that are either conservatives, traditionist or atheists.
The orthodox and conservative jews are the one with the kippa and beard. the orthodox ones are the ones walking around with the black outfit and fur hats.

Everything that has to do with religion is under the supervision of the orthodox jews so the conservative and reformative jews are kinda left out.
But if you stay out of religious cities and neighborhoods the average citizen would consider himself jewish even if they don't believe in god, Judaism isnt just a religion it is a nationality.
Most people are traditionalists and will light candles on sabbath and hannukia on hannuka but they will alow themselves to get tattooed or drive on Saturday altho it is against the religion.

Most people are traditionalists/atheists but when asked will identify themselves as believing and practicing Judaism.
We tend to take a lot of pride in ourselves.
But stuff are pretty tense between jrws and jews. other than the three main currents (orthodox conservatives and reformatives, tradirionalists dont count) there are other smaller currents. also the three main currents are split into smallwr ones and in the end they are all split into two, the jews that came from east Europe and the jews that came from north africa and the middle east.

Stolen land is referring to the Israel - Palestinian conflict and the several wars Israel participated in.
After ww2 the jews began immigrating to israel under the british mandate at the time, the local arab population didn't like this. on 1948 the UN decided on how the country will be devided between the two countries, the Jewish side aggreed to the plan while the local arabd wanted a all or nothing scenario. the day the brits left the country the independence war begun. on the first stage no side declared itself as an independent country and just fought between each other, in that stage the Jewish side conquered all of the area that was designated to it by the UN decision. after that we declared ourselves as an independent country because all of the arab countries around us attacked at once. [shower break and I'll continue this]

    as seen here
    [IMG]
on may 14th 1948 we declared ourselves as an independent country and were attacked by Egypt, Jordan and Syria, invaded what had just ceased to be the territory of the British Mandate.
by that time Israel had an army of 30,000 which fought against all of the arab countries and the Arabian league. by early spring 1949 we had 115,000 soldiers while the combined strength of the Arabian armies was at 55,000
    [IMG]
Israel later continued to defend itself against repeating attacks from Egypt, Syria and the arab league
all of the land under Israeli rule that goes back to another state is given to them by peace treaties or other agreements.
so while technically we did barge in here and just conquer everything both sides are at fault.
the jewish reasoning to be here is the biblical reasoning, historical reasoning, religious reasoning and the claim that every nationality should have its own country.
as a counter agreement the Palestinians started claiming they are the descendeds of the Canaanites that were in Israel before the jewish people came here (which is bullshit as they were all wiped out by the ancient Israelites back then). the only claim the Palestinians have is that they lived in the area of Israel for a couple of generations, the Christian ones may claim that they have a religious claim but they are a minority in Palestinian population and Islam doesn't much of a claim on either Israel nor Jerusalem.

my opinion is that we currently have two options, either absorve the Palestinian minority into ourselves or into the arab minority in a way that wont cause a civil war to break out.
the other option is an all out war leaving Israel united and ready at the borders for an attack instead of squabbling in itself.

    December 22nd and 23rd
I woke up early in the morning and got on the train to beer sheva (a 2.5-3 hour train ride) for my year of service screening in the JNF.
we reached beer sheva at 11am and took a bus to the middle of the desert (it isn't your regular sandy dunes desert)
when we got there they divided us into groups of 5 and each group got a conductor that will be in charge and test us in the following days
our first mission was to build a rujum as a team (we built a single rujum measuring 1.70 meters)
after that we navigated, now I find navigation really easy but we were all with 12kg backpacks on us and we walked with them all day and in the desert everything looks the same so getting lost is really easy.
also its one thing knowing how to navigate, but we navigated in turns and the rest of the group was expected to know exactly where we were.
so that's how we navigated from 12am to 6pm, then we started night navigations, this time we lead in pairs and threes.
all along the navigation tasks we were given random stuff to talk about or pass on to the group as a test of our leadership.
at 1am we reached the final valley (we walked around 12km that day) we were given half a platform of wood a spade and were told we need to set up a shelter (the tallest thing in sight are tiny bushes) dig a fire pit, light a fire, make dinner (pasta with red sauce), make pita bread for tomorrow and be finished with everything in 1 hour.
I set up a shelter with nylon sheets we were asked to bring, I tied them to a mainframe I made out of rope I tied to bushes and stones.
we dug the fire pit and lit the fire, the temperature already dropped below 6 degrees by now and we are all in thermal clothing huddled around the fire making the pasta and tomato sauce, now all of you Europeans might not find 6 degrees cold but it is really cold for us and the desert gets winds of over 20 kph so we were freezing and were just glad to get some warm food, we gave up on making pita bread as we all had our own food for tomorrow.
at 2 am we al went into our sleeping bags and tried to sleep.
at 4:40am we were woken up for guard duty
by 5 am everything was packed and we were on our way again, we started with our activities we pre made back home (each had to be around 30 minute long) I made one about foxes.
we took a breakfast break at around 7-8 and then joined with another group for some more activities and tests.
by the time we got on the bus at ~11am we walked a total of ~18km with our super heavy bags.
all of us had a lot of fun and we were quite shocked at how intense this year of service is.
meanwhile all the guys that came from the JNF were really happy that the screening trip was an easy one, the rest of us were wordless.
we got on the last train north from beer sheva at 12am.
mid way I decided to go visit my ex so I got off the train, took a train a couple of stations back and spent the weekend with her.
ill write about the weekend in another post

    December 23rd
I got off at the train station and my ex's dad took me to their house, on the way he called her and told her he could only go get me in 20 minutes, meanwhile I sneaked in their house (with a 12kg bag) and surprised her.
I was smelly from the fire and the navigation so I took a shower but as all of this was unplanned I didn't have clean clothes so I took a pair of her jeans and a shirt from her father.
we went for a ride in the orange and lemon orchards with her father and @Antra (they have good mandarins)
after that we started making dinner (red soup with some stuff I'm not sure how to translate)
at dinner her aunt and uncle came for a visit (they were kinda surprised to see me)
we had nice peach wine and I went to sleep early (I was dead tired from the screening process)
so I went to sleep on a beanbag in her room.
