Serious Concensus On Napoleon

Hi there. My name is Erin; Wynn Craft player and UC student. I posted this thread today in order to gain information on the public's general consensus on France's Consul and First Emperor: Napoleon Bonaparte.

My reasoning behind this is to complete an assignment assigned by my professor, it requires a poll of individuals foreign to me so I figured it'd be safer to operate the assignment here instead of in a public area (such as a park).

All I ask of you is to vote honestly as this is a college level assignment. Though, along with voting honestly, I ask you to reply back below with your reasoning behind the decision.

Napoleon Bonaparte conquered many regions ruthlessly... killing many in the process.
A life is priceless.
He had some positive impact bringing the I think Europe together somewhat.
Either way.
I really don't know.

 

If you ever want a lesson on Napoleon, feel free to ask me :) His life is one of the most interesting in the history of the world... Him along with King Henry VIII

 

Greetings Erin~! Here's my input for your little assignment!

Despite how people think Napoleon was kind of "selfish" with power, I believe he did have good intentions.
He did lead armies in the French Revolution and also helped reclaim some order in France, gotta give it to him on that aspect.
Plus, France could've ended up in a slightly more distraught situation hadn't it been for Napoleon's political ideas.

I don't really know how much input you need, or more so if I even sound logical with this (xD), but I hope this helps!!

 

Despite you thinking that you're completely lost on this matter, your input is the most brilliant and truthful that I've gotten in sometime (the span of 2 days). You are very much right by saying that France could've wound up in a web of turmoil without him.

I all honesty, I'm not too sure. I just read a biography of Napoleon, and I'm very much conflicted. No one person can be strictly defined as 'good' or 'bad' as there are many sides to the story.

For example, basically all of Europe despised Napoleon for taking over France and humiliating all the other nations, while his own personal soldiers absoloutely loved him.
(An example would be when Napoleon returned from Elba and the armies sent to capture him kept on defecting.)

Napoleon conquered almost all of Europe and ruled FAIRLY (despite all of the British bias being thrown about in history textbooks). His troops, both foreign and French loved him due to him in constant interaction with them (i.e. eating and drinking).

When he returned from Elba (the 100 days), France still wanted him as their leader due to him being their beacon of light out of the French Revolution. Britian, however, HATED him so they set out to stop him. Of course they succeeded and imprisoned him to St. Helena where he lived the rest of his days miserable and alone playing card games like Forty Thieves.

You may have even heard that Napoleon was very narcissistic and egotisitical; all of which is true. Whilst getting crowned Emperor for life in France, he had the audacity to put the crown on by himself; a move that made even more countries than England hate him. THOUGH, Napoleon had every right to act like this. His life was arguably the greatest rag to riches story of all time, he basically had nothing and then at one point EVERYTHING. Power like that will inevitably do something to your head and since Napoleon had that power, his ego expectedly grew.

we don't really learn about him in Israel, he is only mentioned in a few songs and places as the guy who attacked Acre and lost and has a hill and a cannon named after him in the area
