Probability neither picks nor chooses, it simply exists, in the same way that the electron exists as both a wave and a particle at the same time, fully enclosing the entire atomic . . . . never mind. The probability of you getting a mythic in your first chest is the same as the chances of you not getting a mythic after opening 1,000,000 chests. This is an extreme case, but luck works both ways. If one can happen, so can the other. Your friend might have good luck, and you might have just been having bad luck. But it's not ridiculous. If you have 10,000 chances for a mythic to spawn, the odds of you not finding a mythic is still 93%. It's important to note each chest has multiple chances for loot to spawn within it, but I do not know the exact specifics so I cannot guess at the math for that. Probability is just simply a bitch.

Here's something that will trigger you: you've looted 5.3k chests, I've loot hunted like 3.5k

 

You're one out of thousands with this bad luck. Most other people have found a mythic. You're just unlucky. It's impossible for RNG to be rigged.

Here's how to get a mythic:
1) Listen to Aaliyah and Mariah Carey whilst loot hunting
2) Be patient, it's not the end of the world if you don't get a mythic

chance of getting a mythic is 0.0007

 

There's always occasional item bombs and grinding when loot running doesn't work. I find that grinding gives me more legendaries than loot running does.

Also a tip: loot run when the server is up got around 60-90 minutes. You'll then have a higher chance of getting better loot.
