The chestplate makes spell damage pretty shit, maybe he could put a few more points into defense and then use Hetusol?

Gaea Hewn Boot's raw spell damage and % spell damage along with Vaward's % spell damage and Pisces's damage boosts are more than enough to counter CoI's negative stats. Hetusol would be even worse since it both screws up your elemental defense, costs more skill points in defense, and gives around -30% earth dmg. If he prefers higher spell damage then he can use Azurite instead, but he would technically be doing higher damage with CoI since attack speed also boosts the speed you can cast spells giving him higher dps. The point of earth/water is to be decently bulky while being to do high damage in both melee and spells (primarily melee) so focusing only on spell damage is pretty much pointless.

Every weapon, no matter the attack speed, always have the same speed for casting a spell. CoI is still way better if you only want melee, but 100% spell damage is still bad compared to 160%.

Actually it does lol. If you cast a spell faster than the your weapon moves (the animation) the spell won't cast. What made you think CoI made your spells do no damage? Did you not read that the other counters CoI's negative stats? No, its not only for melee, you can still do shit loads of damage with spells. It's perfect for this build since earth/water focuses on spells and melee. Only focusing on spells would be a pointless waste since we only have 5/4 mana regen and earth/water items generally boost both melee and spell damage. So in this case, 160% spell isn't better than 100% spell, if we have more melee damage involved. Coming from someone who has tried using the same build with Azurite instead of CoI, I can say CoI is much better for warrior/mage, while Azurite is better for archer/assassin. (Unless you are doing a melee assassin) If you want to focus only on spells you might as well make an Idol build.
