    why the fuck did they use a submarine that uses ropes instead of an airship or hot air balloon

    To answer the airship one, they have to let out a certain amount of air/magical thing to go down, and they need to somehow procure more to get up.

    why not use something heavier than air, and then when they land use something lighter than air

    It was explained that the submarine was specially designed to withstand void, so if they had used an airship they probably would have died from voids gases and whatnot.

    My question is why did they cheap out with the rope TWICE! Your lucky that platform's ropes didn't snap and kill you...
