As life as a mermaid would go, this wouldn't be the worst day.

Amilda, a young mermaid, followed the other mermen and mermaids into the open sea. They were chasing a Kraken that suddenly started terrorising sailors.

Merpeople were only legends in the world outside. They were the guardians of the sea, hunting down monsters that disturbed the peace. They had made an alliance with the Ragni King and the High Powers of Gavel. In return of keeping the secret of their existence, the merpeople would protect their people in their territory.

Amilda liked exploring in the sea. She liked seeing the city of Selchar, or the Maro Peaks, or the Mage Islands. The other merpeople didn't like her interest in the outside world, and tried to lock her in the underwater city of Atlanik. They always failed. Amilda was great at sneaking out of the city, and the others never realised she went outside.

The Kraken appeared out of nowhere. One day, the sea patrol had received an message from Ragni King that a large creature suddenly started destroying ships. Already thirty lives were lost to the monster. Ten of them were merpeople. She wore a light armor, made of leather. The leather was enchanted so it did not get damaged by water.

Amilda drew her dagger on her sheath. The blade glowed in the darkness of the deep water.
There was a big explosion up ahead. Amilda, and several of her fellow soldiers stopped.

The Kraken was a large, grey monster. It looked nothing like a squid, or an octopus. The monster was like a thick, giant snake with ten tentacles. The tip of each tentacle was sharp, like a claw. The monster had a lizard-like face, complete with green, glowing eyes and sharp teeth. In her life, she had never seen a Kraken before. Now she wished she had never seen it.

The Kraken was fighting about thirty merpeople already. It's tentacles swished around, trying to hit the merpeople. Three of the tentacles were damaged. Several of the merpeople used spell on the monster, but it didn't seem to do much damage.

To Amilda's horror, lots of the tentacles were hitting its mark. One merman was hit by the tentacle, and with a deep gash across his shoulder, fell to the ground. Two of his comrades pulled him out from any more harm.

"Ami, look out!" One of her fellow soldiers shouted. One of the monster's tentacles was coming in her direction. She barely dodged it. She looked around, and saw that almost all of the merpeople were too scared to attack.

If they kept fighting like this, they would all be slaughtered.
Gritting her teeth, she swam up towards the monster's head. She dodged the monster's tentacles, and reached it's neck. The monster didn't seem to notice her. She drew her dagger, and stabbed the monster in its right eye.

The Kraken screeched, and shook its head. Amilda was shaken off, and immediately hit by a tentacle. Luckily, the sharp part had not hit her. Unluckily, she was hit right in the stomach, and she nearly blacked out. She were knocked back to the ground. The Kraken's left eye was on her now. One of the tentacles were aiming at her.

Amilda grimaced. At least she had done some damage.

The tentacle flew towards her. Amilda closed her eyes.

Nothing happened. Then the creature screeched. Amilda opened her eyes, and saw a boy about the same age as her floating in front of her. To her shock, the boy was not a merman, but a human. And he was breathing underwater.

A severed tip of the Kraken's tentacle lay next to her. The boy held a long dagger.
She met the boy's eyes. Then he turned around and swam right towards the monster. The boy cast a spell - A Smoke Bomb, which blinded the monster temporary.

The merpeople attacked with all their might, and the Kraken slowly retreated. The boy swam away from battle.

Then, without warning, a tentacle hit the boy at the back of his head. The helmet he was wearing shattered, like it was made of glass. The boy looked around, his face panicked, and bubbles escaped from his mouth.

He frantically tried to swim to the surface, but was knocked out by another tentacle.
Amilda swam toward the boy. He was no longer breathing. She realised that the helmet had been sustaining his oxygen.

There was no choice. She couldn't let this boy die, when he had saved her life.
Amilda closed her eyes. She muttered, 'I, Amilda, daughter of Almar, place the curse of merpeople upon you."

Suddenly she could not breath. The sea around her darkened, then brightened again. The boy coughed, sending bubbles from his mouth.

    Amilda blacked out.
