To understand the theory I am about to post below, you should understand that all corrupted mobs come from the Nether portal, and when you kill one , it comes back from the portal.

You might also want to consider reading the quest Beneath the depths.

    Ok let's start:
In the quest stated above a sole group of mages managed to sink the village Sarnfic below the ocean. And it was only accesible through a small whole, caused by erosion in my opinion.

If one group of mages took down one village maybe the whole of mage island could make the nether portal sink into the ground and be covered in Earth making it inaccesible for players but also trapping all mobs inside. If no new mobs can get to their original locations, by killing all the left corrupted mobs they want be able to respawn!

Of course this is assuming that the whole of mage Island is sufficient to carry the task. But there are not only mages in mage island. Gundalf, from the Lord of the Clock quest lives near the corrupted area and a person from the ToL quest investigates in the area.

We can also use the tons and tons of mage recruits that are the players. With all these mages it is surely possible to cover the Nether Portal. Even the non-earth build mages can help by casting metiorites and letting the debris of the falling rock collect there.

Then all the other players can kill the corrupted without them respawning and we got rid of the corruption!

If I got anything wrong please list down below.

I am aware that the mages put Sarnfic below the ocean, but taking in count the variation in elements it would be equally possible to do it with Earth.

    This is just a theory.

It's possible to corrupt oceans. That's why the villagers closed the Gavel Gate, in case it ever does reach the edge of the ocean and corrupts the ocean.

If the Sarnfic Cave was created by erosion, why aren't there large holes in the seafloor everywhere? There isn't enough current at the bottom of the ocean to cause erosion, real life trenches are caused by tectonic activity.

I think if this were possible, it would have been done long ago.

I always thought of corruption like thaumcraft's taint, the mobs spawn from the source but the taint converts mobs as it spreads.

I think that pushing the roots of corruption underground would only delay the problem. Corruption would still grow, only underground and slowly would convert the stone around it. This would give us time, yes, but by the time the corruption reaches the surface it will encompass a wider area.

It is the mobs we are worrying about. They will not be able to go out. With the mobs trapped there is no threat. Corruption spreads by mobs and if the mobs are in one place it will not spread. Also the mobs will go dormant by the time they can do anything.

    Considering sinking Sarnfic would likely have required the Earth element as well, as rising the sea level will cause problems, perhaps altering fault lines, considering, as FlamingPinecone mentioned above;
In a nutshell, cracks in Sarnfic were likely due to tectonic activity.
This makes me believe there is a fault line under Sarnfic. Rising water will cause floods, considering there is no change in water around that area. The village was probably either sunk from a fault line or destroyed altogether.

But once the corruption reaches the surface would the mobs not be able to spawn? I would think the portal would be able to spawn mobs on top of any corruption...

In the quest it says the mages sunk it. I was describing the opening was made by erosion. The cracks are made by it being forced underwater.
The mobs spawn IN the nether portal not on top.

But would the portal be able to be "sunk" in that sense? Like if it is impossible to destroy it, is it possible to move it?

I meant to say that the mages may have tampered with the fault line to sink it.

Put the nether portal in the effing air. The mobs spawn, then drop, and the fall kills them. Problem solved.

I mean, you would have to lift alot of dirt stone and ore for that, even a few hundred mages probably couldn't do that.

Or just get a team of engineers to basically design a clentaminator, and clean it all away.
If they can make quartz mechs, a clentaminator shouldn't be too crazy.
