Hello, and welcome back to Featured Wynncraftian! For those new to the series, this is where us moderators interview notable players in the community. You can even nominate someone here, if you'd like.

This time we are interviewing someone who was part of the team involved in the creation of wynncon and that has coded a tool to help you guys search for items, i am talking about @Ascended Kitten

Let's start the interview then:

You have been a member of the forums for quite a while, what has made you stay in the community for so long?

When I joined I had a lot of rl friends also playing the game, but after a while those friends quit, and I also lost interest in the game soon. Luckly, I re-discovered the server later, and finished what was left, reaching the levelcap at that time (75) and also discovering the forums & the community in general for myself. I started being more active and made some great friends I stil l have contact to! Said friends & the great time I was having (and still have) with the forum-community made me stay, even tho I wasn't active in game anymore.

How long have you been programming?

I've started coding about 3 years ago, as a hobby, but that was more copying and value-changing than actual programming. Minecraft got me into coding, but it is quite tricky to add something not included in a tutorial without understanding the basics. Since last year I attend a technical college focused on software-development, which helped me to re-learn fundamental stuff I skipped whenI first started.
Lately I've been getting back to modding, and created a client-side mod for Wynncraft to experiment with some features, e.g reading identifications before actually identifying the item (which obviously wasn't allowed, and therefore got removed again :p)

Any advice you can give to people that want to start coding/programming?

Developing is something that takes quite a while to get into, and you reaaaaally shouldn't do it when you don't enjoy it. Coding for profit is nice and fine, but without motivation it will get unbelievable boring and repetitive. That said, if you really enjoy coding / at least would like to try, there are many good ways to start. I'd recommend starting with the basics of the programming-language you prefer, and watching some tutorials, or reading books.
Even tho it is tempting to start with e.g developing an application with fancy user-interface, you won't have a chance to expand it further without fundamental basics.
Remember that whatever you choose, you'll need a lot of determination to continue, but in the end, the results will always pay off ^-^

What was your involvement with the making of wynncon?

I joined a bit after the idea was born, and was responsible for the creation of plugin, which helped managing the speeches, and provided some small features. I made a few changes to the permissions and ranks and held a speech, but compared to other people on the team didn't do that much in total.
However, I think I am allowed to say that we are working on the next Wynncon, which will be more controlled, and also feature some custom minigames!

Did you enjoy working on it and would you be interested in being part of another event like that?

I absolutely loved being part of Wynncon and its creation, and would agree to join similar projects at any time!

What is your opinion on the upcoming update and what do you like/dislike about it?

I haven't had time to experience the new content myself, but from the changeblog and some threads made by others I don't doubt I'll love it! It's great to see updates are released with shorter "breaks" in between now, and especially the reworked quests are definitely worth starting a new class for.

What do you think about that mysterious "V.S.S. Seaskipper" in the second changeblog ? Do you think it's related to your suggestion?

While I haven't seen nor read enough to tell if it is related in any way, I love its look, and the name goes perfectly with the usage! Travelling through the ocean and questing there should (hopefully) be a way better experience now. Ships were something I wanted to happen for a long time, and it is great to see it finally happen, no matter if my suggestion was used as a little inspiration or not!

How did you discover wynncraft and for how long have you been playing it ?

I discovered Wynncraft in late 2013, when Troms was still new content and the levelcap was just increased to 75!
A close reallife friend introduced me to the server, and I started playing on my own soon after that. However, I didn't really get in touch with the community until about 1 year ago, when I started to actively use the forums.​

Like other forum members, your profile picture is from Homestuck. What do you like from this web comic ?

Well then, let me tell you about Homestuck! As most of you know, Homestuck is a huge webcomic, which ended this year after starting in 2009. I personally love it for its complicated and unique concept, as it really isn't just a regular story you see every day, but makes use of everything the genre has to offer. It goes as far as including the creator and narrator in the plot, having tons of characters from different universes and timelines interact with each other, and using actions made thousands of pages ago to decide important outcomes when you least expect it. There are a lot more reasons to list, but since I've probaly already bored everyone to death, I'd rather let you see yourself!​

Because of your name and your old profile picture, we see that you love cats. Why this passion?

Cats are great! They are cute, cuddly, and make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. In some way I always wanted to reflect that, at least trying to support other people around me; while that is a lame reason alone, I always liked the name ;)
