This thread contains spoiler for Flight in Distress, Fantastic Voyage, and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door!
Note: This won't be a very polished thread, as it's just something that I wanted to share with you guys and not a theory or something. This might have been already noticed, if so then tell me. Also, I'm not saying that any of this is fact. On to the thread!

So some of you may have played a game called "Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door" for the Gamecube. It's pretty much an RPG with a paper aesthetic. Why am I bringing this up? Well, it looks like some quests may have been inspired by TTYD. The quests I'm talking about are Flight in Distress and Fantastic Voyage. To see the similarities, we need to inspect the settings of the quests and of two chapters in ttyd - 5 and 6, to be exact.

    FV and Chapter 5:
Chapter 5 - You go on a ship to find a treasure on a dangerous island. You get shipwrecked and you set up camp on the island until you find a way to return to the mainland.
Fantastic Voyage - You go on a ship to find a treasure on gateway island. You get shipwrecked and you set up camp on the island. Then there are some more parts to the quest, but they're irrelevant to this discussion.

    FiD and Chapter 6:

Chapter 6 - You go on an expensive train for a 3-day journey to poshley heights. Some problems come up and you have to help the passengers. On the final day, the train gets attacked by "smorgs" (irrelevant, but they're enemies that swarm together) and you need to defeat the boss (a bunch of smorgs) to save the train and passangers.
Flight in Distress - You go on a large airship for a long journey to detlas. A child gets lost and you have to help out (Problem the first). You sleep for a few hours, and then the engines break down (Problem the second). Once you help out and go back to sleep, you wake up to find that pirates attacked your airship. You must defeat them and their queen to save the airship and passengers.

Both sound pretty similar to me! Of course, I'm not accusing people of copying ttyd or anything, but these quests might be inspired by the game. It would be great to have a GM confirm/disprove this.

So what do you think? Is it too big of a stretch? Are there any other quests which could have been inspired by certain games? Please share them here :D

I'm surprised you haven't mentioned that ToA and The Hive are incredibly similar the Pit of 100 trials.

Also, I found another thing in Wynncraft that is similar to Paper Mario.

The quest "The Passage" reminds me of:

I was thinking the same exact thing with Flight in Distress when Gavel came out...
When I did the quest for the first time, I definitely got some TTYD vibes from that. Glad someone thinks the same!

Well, the general formula is the same, a gauntlet raid with powerful enemies with a superboss at the very end. (Qira/Death, Bonetail)

Gotta be honest; I've never played Paper Mario. However, it is really funny to see how similarly I made Flight in Distress to that Paper Mario chapter ;D

I hated it :( It was nothing compared to the original two, and even the third one at least had an actual story and characters.
Wow, that's a pretty neat coincidence :D It's actually one of my favourite quests, probably because chapter 6 is one of my favourite chapters :P

It may just be that it was a subconscious influence. If these games were from the relatively old game cube, the GMs who made this quest may have played Paper Mario. Then, without realizing it, their subconscious drew from this past experience as a source for inspiration without any explanation for where the idea came from.

This has happened before, and people have been sued for unknowingly stealing someone else's ideas. For example, the opening of Ice, Ice Baby was nearly identical to Under Pressure and lawsuits were filed for it.

TTYD was such an amazing mario rpg. It had witty and delightful humor. The gameplay was top, puzzles were well thought out, maps were fucking amazing, the fights in the game were challenging and intense. There are so many items, secrets, jokes, and quests. All the characters were lovable in their own way, and they made the whole experience more fun. And the story is just down right beautiful, it has such a simple yet complicated and intriguing plot. I could go on for 3 hours just telling you how amazing the game is, but you have to play it to understand how truly amazing it is. This is a nintendo master piece 9.4/10 EVERYONE SHOULD FUCKING PLAY THE GAME FUCK YOUUUUU
