"So, things with water. I probably should've thought about it more before asking."

 

"Haha, yeah," Katie says, "I like you, you're nice to talk to."

 

"Thanks! By the way, I'd like to know the names of more of your group. Can you tell me some?"

 

"Well, there's Artemis, Abigail and Stephanie who are my friends, Myria who's Artemis' mother, Ruby who's a preserver, Ragnyon who's an...oracle, I think, Thirteen who's a robot sort of guy, Sgavrinn who's Artemis' pet, and Rineth, who's Ihra's guardian." Katie explains.

 

"Woah. Kinda a lot of people. What does Ihra need that many people to help her with anyways? An expedition of sorts?"
Crystal asks, while looking behind Katie at the rest of the group.

 

"I'm not sure; but it's nice to have friends around, right?" Katie says happily.

 

"Hidden and accepting? Sounds like a good place to stay. I'm not sure the revenge quest should be our focus, though. Not immediately."

"Sounds like me if I was a forest! Is there a sphere of influence you have, or can you overgrow the entire island?"

"Be careful. I hate to think what being could have caused the collapse of an entire kingdom."

"The Birthlake has always been expanding. The magic inside us is permanent, so in theory the forest could cover the island, adapt to being in seawater, and then eventually cover the whole world. Of course, it takes so long for a forest to grow larger, especially with a forest this dense, so the forest would probably never grow that large."

 

"Well, at least the world would be pretty! Still, maybe it's best this stays just here. Someone might try to take the power of the birthlake for themselves."

 

"We have to expand whatever happens. And besides, the Birthlake has even more defence if it expands. Though we prefer being small like this, one day we will be far larger."

 

"Hopefully people don't try to steal the magic used here. This seems like a nice, peaceful place."

 

"Yeah! Of course it is. Well, from what I heard, it is."
Crystal seems minorly dejected.

 

"Well, I consider you a friend. You've only been nice to me so far, and you've given me no reason to distrust you!" Katie says happily.

 

Crystal smiles once more.
"Thanks. Ihra was right when she said you were nice."

 

"She did? That's so nice of her!" Katie says happily.

 

"Yeah. She seems nice too."
Pause.
"Hey, what were you doing before you saw me?"

 

"I was just talking to the birthlake, it's very interesting." Katie says.

 

I groan.
"Please, I'm giving one chance for the path to be reopened before I force my way out of here!" I yell out to the forest. A small orb of frostfire forms in my other hand.

 

"The Birthlake talks?"
Crystal seems confused.

 

"Oh, I don't expect you to come with me on my revenge quest. Once we arrive, you can do whatever you want. I'm sure someone with your skill could find a job there. I've heard dwarves and elves are welcome there as well, so you should be treated fairly." I pause. "Dragons used to live in the deserts of Asrodonia until they were wiped out by humans. Maybe the dragons and your race have something in common. It's said that the few remaining dragons left the continent, so maybe the immortal creatures are still alive."
