"Only the sample you put into the ocean would be sentient."

So, who are you?

Once you go through the gap, you quickly see around you. A wall of plants surrounds the shores of a lake. Magic is visible all over the lake.
Some magic is concentrating where Ihra is walking into the lake.

As Ihra walks further into the lake, more of her body feels relaxed and refreshed. Magic visibly collects around her.

 

"Aj." I sign.


"How far are we from the birthlake?" Katie asks.

 

"This is the place Daras was talking about... It's nice."
Pause.
"Huh. I feel telepathic users everywhere around me. Hello?"

 

I look around at the plants before heading closer to Ihra.

 

"Will it loose it's sentience if diluted into the water?"

 

"A map?" I say. "We won't need a map. We just should travel northwest until we hit the sea, then look for a boat. There'll be countless small town that aren't big enough to be marked on a map, so if we do need one, I'm sure we can buy one there." I pause for a moment. "If we move fast and take a slight detour, we probably should get to Bremaves. It's a small town I heard of a while back. Apparently the soil is good for farming vegetables."

 

"Well... alright. I'll take your word for it, but I think it's safest we get off the mainland first. From what you were saying, outsiders aren't welcome many places."

 

"The further west we get, the more accepting they'll get. I mean, I doubt they'd let you into the city, but they surely wouldn't attack on sight. The people who live in the northern island are peaceful, so they'd probably let you into their towns." I think for a moment. "Y'know, dragons used to live in the deserts millennia ago. Wiped out by humans though. Say, maybe your race and them have some sort of connection."

 

"Wouldn't that give them a reason to kill me?"

 

Interesting name...

Daras says, "It's through the gap in the trees just ahead."
You are already starting to adjust to the bright light, even in the shaded forest.

Ihra hears a chorus of "Hello", "Hi", "Greetings" and many other greetings.
Even the lake itself seems to join in.

You can hear the plants murmuring slightly. Other than that, the Birthlake is tranquil.
When you step into the water, you notice that some of the magic in the lake is concentrating around you.

"No, the water always stays separate from other water. It wouldn't dilute at all, so it wouldn't lose its sentience."

 

Startled, Ihra jumps.
"I... uh... hi..."
She looks around, not yet believing that the plants are sentient.

 

"I think 'Por' is more interesting." I sign, smiling.


Katie runs ahead, speeding through the gap in the trees.

 

I sit at the edge of the lake, and simply watch Ihra.

 

"So if you dump some Birthlake water into the ocean, there is the off chance that some sailors will talk to it?" I ask, "Or can the Birthlake not talk?"

 

The water below her ripples slightly.
"What is your name?"
It's slightly unnerving when you hear many different beings say the same thing at the same time.

Thank you, I guess? Por probably isn't a common name for other beings.

She looks startled and looks around.

"Yes, the Birthlake can talk. But it probably wouldn't talk to anyone unless it had a reason to."

 

"I'm Ihra. Are... are you the lake?"

 

"I see...and how can the Birthlake talk?"

 

"So you're a creation of this birthlake?" I sign.

 

She's fine.
I think to myself.
I then try and look deeper in the water to see if any plants might live in the birthlake.

 

"Nice name."
She then hears a chorus of 'yes' and 'no'.
Some beings then say together, "Yes, we are the lake, but the forest is also speaking too."

"It talks telepathically. Unlike the plants, it can directly connect to your mind."

Yes, I was created by the Birthlake.

The lake is, apart from the magic inside it, crystal clear. It appears to be very shallow, even in the centre. However, there are no plants in the lake itself.
