Reason For Deletion?

So, I've wondered this for a while, and I haven't found an answer to it.

When you go to delete one of your posts, it comes up with a text box with 'Reason for Deletion:' next to it (titled "Delete post by [YourUsername]"), I'm just curious why this is here and what it does. I figured maybe mods could access a section of a thread containing all the deleted posts, with their reasons for deletion. However, it doesn't stop you from deleting posts without entering a reason, which would make the system sort of broken.

So could anyone tell me what the 'Reason for Deletion' does?

 

It gives something extra for mods to read when they're working doing nothing.

 

So if I delete a post that someone else made on my profile I will pop up as an alert for them the reason of deletion

 

Oh, that makes sense. Though what about posts on threads? Do mods really have a 'Deleted Posts' section?

 

Obviously they do.
They need to check everything that was there and is now not, and every one of them always checks it every 5 minutes, to make sure nothing important was deleted.

 

Ah, I guess that sort of makes sense, though I doubt they check it every five minutes (because they have to deal with kids screaming about being banned), though it must be awkward for them if users don't provide a reason for deletion.

 

Yeah, but I think you don't even have to fill out the box.

 

Maybe it's because someone could write about ??? And then delete it a few minutes later, showing the answer to someone but not leaving enough hit time for a mod to see. Then the mod couldn't check deleted posts and couldn't ban the player.
