I was wondering if anyone here who is experienced with owning servers could help answer a couple questions. I would like to start a server for myself and one other friend so we can more easily work on creating maps together. At most, it would just be the two of us getting online, so we wouldn't need a large server or anything. We would really only need WorldEdit and VoxelSniper for plugins. I have no experience at all with owning a server or how to set it up, so I apologize for the very basic questions.

My first question is, is it possible to use a single player map as the server's map, and to then switch it back into a single player map once we're done editing it on the server? Also, would it be possible to easily switch out maps (if we want to work on one for awhile, and then switch to another project?)

Next question is what kind of server host would you recommend for a project like this, and how much would it cost? Again, we don't need anything that's great for hosting large amounts of people or even many plugins, but we do need to be able to create some rather large maps and have those two plugins.

I would appreciate any advice. :)

Yes, for your first question, it is possible to switch maps from single-player to your server files or multiplayer, by copying the server map/world from your .minecraft file, particularly, "saves" file, then paste it through FTP or any file transfer program to your server file (Or even through your host console).

The same method can actually be used to switch it back to single-player, simply enter the server files, pickup the world and upload it into your .minecraft "saves" file again.

Also a plugin can be useful to easily load/unload maps, I'd recommend Multiverse plugins :)

Any trustable host can have these features, all hosts, but I'd recommend MCProHosting since I have experienced a server with it before, smooth loading and no lag (There are other good better hosts but I'm just mentioning the ones I've experienced). You can pick any plan as long as you feel okay with it.

    I hope that was helpful!

Thanks, that was helpful! :) I'm not the best at working with technical stuff, so if a plugin exists that allows us to swap out maps from server to single player easily, that would be great. I am used to working with save files in the .minecraft folder. If I had a server, would the server have files either in the .minecraft folder or somewhere else on my computer? Also, is it fairly easy to set up plugins?

Thanks for recommending a host, too. I'm never sure when I just look at Google if the ones that show up are actually trustworthy or not, so I like to hear others' recommendations. :)

I don't know if a plugin can assist you fast up this project transferring worlds from single-player to an actual server, but I believe it could exist somewhere in the internet if you dig it out, but I personally never seen a plugin which allows you to do that throughout my journey of minecraft.

I don't know if you're talking about setting up a server on your computer:
If you are setting it on your computer it's all free but not 24/7 unless you leave your PC up without shutting it down which is harmful for your computer. However, yes it is easy to set up plugins in a computer-server, Bukkit simply grants you this access and the ability to add plugins through "plugins" file in your computer-server file.

If you are setting it on a host (Not on your computer), it's a different story, but the method stays the same, what changes is that the server files aren't stored on your computer, instead it's on the host's files through the browser or file transfer protocol program, but it isn't free of course ^v^

I hadn't planned on setting it up on my computer, definitely through a host. That being said, I'm not sure exactly how to do either, but hopefully some tutorials online will help. :)

So, is it still easy enough to transfer world save files from a server's host to my computer and vice versa? I know the hosting isn't free but is the file transfer program also not free? Sorry, I really have no idea how to picture this since I haven't done it yet. :P Would it be considered a Bukkit server if it's through a host, and would Bukkit plugins still be able to easily be added to a server through a host?

    Hey!

Well, yes it is easy enough if you transfer them manually, simply as mentioned above on my post you just copy the world and paste it in through host's console or file transfer protocol program, and the same if you switch them back (Multiverse plugins can load up worlds without chunk errors), and yes it's free, you can download it anywhere, I'd recommend FileZilla since I've used it many times before, but if you don't want any programs opted, you can use the host's file transfer itself through your browser (I don't know about other hosts but MCProHosting has this feature, and it's free when you buy your plan/server ^v^).

Either through a host or your computer, it's the same, but a host has its options more advanced, you can select any system from SpigotMC to Bukkit just through your host without downloading. But it can be set manually if you upload the Bukkit file to your server and launch it afterwards.

In a host, plugins can be added through file transfer program or through the host itself, but hosts usually have a feature displays you a list of all current plugins and allows you to add them by simply clicking at a plugin, if you didn't find a plugin there, FTP is your friend :)

As far as host goes I highly recommend https://ggservers.com/

Cheaper than other fund obssessed hosts, and just as, if not more, powerful
Plus, it gives you a nice control panel and console, and makes installing plugins incredibly simple. Just search for the name of the plugin, click, and install!
