Before, that's how almost ALL servers survived. Most servers are still up.

I guess faction servers are just sticking to tradition.
    Which Mojang doesn't like.

Well, I hope they change their minds and comply with the EULA.

Yeah. I'd be sad to see popular servers die.

There's this one call of duty server I play on, I've been playing on it for a while and have seen it go through many stages. Here's a timeline: noobs------>people get better-------->dildo (grenade) launcher war-----------> dildo launcher nerfed, rpg war----->rpg nerfed, people start quitting------->few players make good matches scarce-----------> new cod comes out, server grows again--------> rpg buffed, rpg war 2---------> lmg spamming ***holes ------->server is taken over by donor killstreaks and lmgs, impossable to play during the "rush hour". So many egotistical kids who get kills by holding right click. And do you know what the most ****ed part is? The staff have had barely any contact with us, and there's no email to them, so I can't even report the server to mojang, sad thing is, it's really fun, it's just the majority of players are cancer and don't want to even try to play the game.

In my opinion the EULA itself was a mistake already. It is just the start of mojang/microsoft forcing there Realms Servers on us, and since no one wants to use those, they try to shut down other servers, starting with those their overpriced Realms could replace, and then slowly taking down all other servers, by e.g.: changing the EULA so servers are not allowed to earn any money.
But it is bad for them, because in my opinion there are two reasons minecraft is such a big game.
    1. Mods
    2. Servers with plugins
Taking those down will destroy a huge community and will cost Microsoft more money then Realms can ever bring them.

Since when does the EULA take down all servers that make money?

The EULA isn't forcing people to get their realms, they have a EULA because:
it's not inforcing their realms to be bought.
(This is a definition I found on that website...)

Uhhh, EULA doesn't prevent servers from getting money you know... It just restricts P2W

I did not say the EULA is enforcing reams directly. But I think Microsoft is trying to actually destroy that community step by step. So e.g. if a server as wynncraft, would have no way of gaining money due to the EULA being changed again and actually prohibiting servers from gaining any money it would be put down. And that would force people to use realms since there is no other option. The EULA itself was only a first step and only took out servers which were unable to adapt to the new system. I say Microsoft is stupid enough to destroy the Minecraft community just so they can sell their Realms.
