    I can give you some tips on Blender!
    1. Use Cycles. No wonder the lighting is weird, if you use internal render. That's why the shadows are completely black.


    2. Extrude the skin using the solidify modifier, to achieve realisem, and details. (Extrude able rig is recommanded).

    3. Rotate the camera while looking in the camera view to achieve better camera angles.

    4.use transparent background, and add a better one using Photoshop.

    Render the background seperate basically, then photoshop together?

    Actually, the intire background is made in Photoshop :P. (for the renders without terrain)

    I, myself use something called 3 point lighting. It's when you have 3 lights in your renders. First 2 lights are "suns" that makeyellow-ish light. The 3rd light is the skylight, which makes light blue-ish light. The blue-yellow lighting is is realistic enought, so there's no need to use Phtoshop on the image. Sometimes, You need to, but it dephends on what your scene looks like.
