If you have any sanity whatsoever you would not increase the worth of the item in your mind from 10LE to 15LE just because the starting bid is lower :I

 

having more bids is more attention grabbing and some people are rich enough to just care about showing their amazingness lol

I would agree with this mostly, except for the beginning part. The reason that most people may say that is because they are afraid of their starting price turning off many potential bidders. For example, I have seen many threads in which someone has made the starting price at what they were looking for, just to see people go "DAT PRICE 2 HI scammm LOWER PLOX!!!111!1one1" just because the initiator of the auction put the start at the price he/she was looking for.

And I hope that your guys know that this is an actually tactic used in real life silent auctions. Heck, even @LoveLusting used this once when she was auctioning guild art, and no one had a problem then. Why do we have an issue with it now?

You forgot the people who are buying cheap mythics ingame, because some people don't know about the price (they tell them it's worth 32 Le, when it's actually worth 2 Stacks of le), and selling them for way more money.

That's why when that happens I give up on the thread, and don't buy from them.

The problem isn't with the low starting bids. It's the fact that people do not keep their promise and sell the item if the bid doesn't go as high as desired. In my Leo silent auction I put the starting bid as 1 emerald, and I was willing to sell it for that much should it have came to it since I didn't need it anyway. I wasn't disappointed with the 40LE winner but that doesn't mean everyone else can just assume people would do the same.

That's not wrong, the sellers got what they think was the worth, and they would have been happy with their money. The fact that the buyers can then sell it for more money doesn't and shouldn't impact the original seller in any way.
