Everyone knows about the Corruption, but if you've been playing Wynncraft recently, you'll know of another realm, the Realm of Light. In this theory I'll also throw in another realm, the Realm of Shadows mentioned in the Memory Paranoia quest.

This theory/debate is trying to disprove that the Decay is Darkness. I wanted to gather evidence for the opposite, however all evidence that I found was pointing to Darkness not being Decay. Sorry @SPYROHAWK , gg man, you win.

    Origin
Where did the Decay come from? According to the cut-scene in Taproot, it came from a meteorite. It along with the creature inside it spread Decay over two thirds of the forest (Lexdale is part of the forest).

However, the Decay didn't come from space, right? This is in the fantasy/magic genre, not sci-fi aliens. But was it magically summoned from the sky? Perhaps...

"From soils of doom the servant laid...
...break through the realms to the land of trade."

Now from this quote we might infer that a servant helped the "soil of doom" (I'm guessing the Decay) "break through the realms" which could mean the meteorite flew through some of the realms to get to "the land of trade".

You might be wondering how someone could summon a meteorite... until you consider that the servant could be a dark Mage class who summoned a meteor. This magic exists, and with a lot of energy/power and a lot of dark magic this might be plausible.

Then again, that's a theory for another time.

    Summary:
    - Decay came from a meteorite
    - Realms are like bubbles of existence which can be broken into?
Where did Darkness come from? Truth is, we haven't seen it except in Fantastic Voyage when you find a portal. Look at this quote from The Realm of Light quest:

"I sense that your species is somewhere in the middle" - Trump Immortal of pure light

That means that the Darkness could be to the south of Wynn (not going to talk about Dern just yet).
    To further prove this...

    1. Corruption occurs between the Dark and the Light (I can't remember where I found this info, please comment!)
    2. In some quests you are conflicted and choose the "Dark side".

Now, as for how it originated, we will have to wait until the Dern Expansion™ (or we could make really wild theories, but nobody actually knows much).

    Summary:
    - Darkness is supposedly to the south of Wynn

    Portals
    We know of three portals:
    1. Corruption
    2. Light
    3. Dern or Darkness?

However, there may be more! Holy bovines! Let's not get ourselves too hyped, though. Why do I say this? Well, this is a bit of a long shot...

"There are realms beyond our comprehension, powers we can not hope to defeat. Two immense forces are at war, with our plain of existence being the battleground."

Why not say "the immense forces"? Maybe "two" sounded better (it does imo). I think there may be more. I also think Grian & Salted are trying to eventually set up an "expanded universe" too. Why is this important to proving Darkness & Decay are different? Decay might need its own realm. What if
the realm of "shadows, deceit, and pain" isn't Darkness? Darkness could be greed, power and evil for all we know. Maybe the "Realm of Shadows" isn't the Realm of Darkness. It could be. The words could be used interchangeably. But it's only a maybe for now. We'll find out in 3 years or so (jk I literally can't wait).

Remember the portal of Corruption? If there were only two realms, there wouldn't be Corruption. Not only that, but the portal supposedly teleports you underground to the Ancients' underworld. This means that portals can be opened not only to Realms but places, like a super powerful TP scroll.

    Summary:
    - Portal to Corruption proves portals are not exclusive to the main Realms
    - More than two Realms, possibility for Decay/Realm of Shadows to be different from Darkness

Whew. Remember, this is all necessary to understand why I think Decay isn't Darkness.

    A Few Other Clues

Villagers don't mention that they think the Decay came from Dern or is Darkness
Grian said in the live stream that the Decay is different from Corruption or Darkness

    So, to sum up:
    - Multiple Realms could exist, including a separate one for the Decay (in Fruma? ._.)
    - Dern and Darkness could have different origins, so they may be different

A couple of sequels in the future that I might make, all on one thread to stop spam :)
    - Abandoned Mines and the Island of Amnesia: Dern or Decay? (Part 2 of this theory)
    - Could the Decay possibly have come from space? (it's a wild one XD)

Do you want to tell me what you think? Try to prove me wrong (it's kinda easy, so go for it!).

    Fails pointed out be commenters:
    - Nothing so far (not for long!)

How about we think about it logicaly
    Realms=planets
Portals through realms = worm holes and the meteor was actually a space ship from another planet and the decay is actually like a "bomb" that was dropped on our planet
No darkness no light but a weapon

    Far-fetched... I like it XD

The Decay was nuclear bomb which released radiation which is killing the forest...

    Maybe.

    Just maybe.

A lot of people would disagree though...

It'll be a fine theory nonetheless, and there is evidence to support it.

Noel. Noel oh Noel. I challenged you to make a theory that would blow me away. You did it without even realizing it. I am not as interested as if Darkness and Decay are the same or different, we know they are different, but about your explanation. I knew something was up with all the meteors, but I did not think if connecting it here. The purple and blue meteors, the white ones, they all are important. You even go on to boldly state that the realms could exist in their own sphere of influence, in which cosmic meteors can go through. I would have NEVER thought of that.

You, my friend, truly are a theorist

My thoughts exactly. Since we still have not gotten around to sacrificing Rujala, we cal always be in need of more. I think noel is just the chap.

I guess I don't remember the Taproot cut scene super well but didn't the worm burst out of the ground?
Also I figured Realm of Light=Cause for the river barrier/light forest, Realm of Darkness/Shadows=Cause of Decay, Nether=What happens when Light and Dark crash over an entire Realm for control.
But then that raises the question of why there isn't corruption (at least) along the river in Gavel where Darkness and Light are battling right next to each other. So more proof that Decay=/=Darkness?

Aye, the mod is the right. That's one hole in this, there wasn't a meteorite, but there was the black worm creature. Maybe not from the sky, but underground. Also, there is a magic that very few know of called Cosmic, mentioned a lot in Purple and Blue; basically, space magic thats super powerful, and make you go crazy. See, now choosing the dark side for stuff, usually greedy stuff, people assume you are the good guy all the time, but the concept of good and evil is mute in most games; cause yer only a human doing human things. Which leads me to believe that Decay has a damn hard time with affecting humans.
For being between Light and Dark, this could be both physically and metaphysically. There is a realm of light that is under attack, and if I remember correctly, Grian or some other bigwig said that Dern was a realm, but we should treat it like a province. There is a good chance, however, there is a portal in the south of Wynn.
Also, a couple traits you mention for darkness, are actually for decay (usually obsession or greed). There is, however, a chance we have an opportunity to observe darkness effecting someone. There's a guy outside of Llevigar, Stolen Star Quest (?) (the quest where you find the stolen meteor) who's half enderman and completely marbles (going off ender stuff is Dernic stuff). Or it could evidence of... Well... @Rujala
You got a good grasp on this, just some tweaking needs to be done here and there.

not exactly realm. It was Grian (I would know, it was on my thread). He said "far off dark land" but yes, it leads people to belive it is a realm. We assume one portal is in the abandoned mines and one is on gateway island. When you say "south of wynn" you are most likely referring to the mines

Grian said the Decay was different than corruption, though the two seem to be linked. My understanding of it is that Corruption is created when light and darkness contact each other, whereas Decay is what happens when light is removed from its area and (possibly) replaced with darkness. I have no idea if any of that is actually how it works, though WynnExcavation Site D seems to confirm the former statement.
