Have you ever walked into the north-west of Gavel and seen those menacing fangs, that terrifying agility and the determination that nothing human could ever have? Yes, the Devourer. The monster which roams the Dark Forest, the Kander Forest and sometimes the Swamps. Heck, I heard that someone had been followed all the way to Cinfras by the Devourer. Or is it Devourers? Well, here is what we know about them.

    The Devourer

    Devourer.jpg
(Credits to @Moe_Ronickah for this picture once again)

    Name: Devourer
Race: ??? (or more likely, you will find out later)
Appearance: A black-robed demonic creature with gigantic fangs, always wielding crude daggers.
Lore: ??? (though I will explain more about them later)
Locations: Mainly the Dark Forest and Kander Forest, sometimes the swamp and areas further east.
Traits: Incredibly agile, very powerful, hard to kill, rarer than most creatures in the same areas.
Habits: Known to chase enemies relentlessly through the northern areas. I myself was once chased, as a level 50something from Olux all the way into the deeper parts of the Dark Forest. Luckily I managed to escape from that place alive... just.

    The Escaped Devourer

Note: While I will not claim that I am the first to find this, I have not actually seen any mention of this on the forums before.

    2016-01-13_15.55.33.png

    Name: Escaped Devourer
    Race: Devourer
Appearance: A black-robed demonic creature with gigantic fangs, always wielding crude daggers.
Lore: While nothing is known about these creatures, the one I found was surrounded by blood, dead bodies of it's prey and a roughly made pit.
Locations: Pre-Light Forest, very near to the orc fortress in a pit and a cave filled with dark magic.
Traits: Incredibly agile, very powerful, hard to kill, rarer than most creatures in the same areas. While I'm not sure about this last one, I think it can either cast magic to create a hole of this size or it can dig with powerful claws... or maybe it uses it's teeth?!
Habits: Likes to sit in this hole forever, seemingly to hide. I guess we'll move onto more of this later...

    Timestone Cave

    2016-01-13_20.48.25.png
    2016-01-13_20.48.52.png
    2016-01-13_20.49.08.png

Location Name (given by me): Timestone Cave
Area: Pre-light Forest, located near to the previously found Devourer Pit and the orc fortress.
    Inhabitants: Escaped Devourers, Petrified Adventurers
Interesting Aspects: Lava flows and pits, 'Timestone'
Lore: Nobody knows the origins of the Timestone. Some say it fell from the sky. Others say a powerful sorcerer created it. However, the Devourers are attracted to it, as they are slightly immune to its abilities.

    Medusa's Cave

    2016-01-13_21.28.53.png
    2016-01-13_21.29.27.png

Location Name (given by me): Medusa's Cave
Area: The edge of the Dark Forest and the Pre-light Forest
    Inhabitants: Medusa, Petrified Adventurers
Interesting Aspects: Stone. Seriously, this cave has more stone than normal.
Lore: Medusa was a Nymph who ventured too far from the Light Forest. She came across a cave with a relic, which we now know as the Timestone. She tried to tap into its power but was cursed to with the power of the stone itself. When she found out, by accidently freezing her family in stone, she hid inside a cave which was turned into a time-frozen stone. Adventurers were told of the cave but none have come out alive... which is why you have to have a complex ward woven about you when you enter this place.

    Devourer Theories and Ideas

Theory A - The Devourer Race: As soon as I found the Escaped Devourer, I realised two things. Firstly, the word 'Devourer' makes it look like there is more than one. More than that, I have seen another one. Then there is 'Escaped'. It does look like it is hiding in this hole and it is very far away from other Devourer sightings. But escaped from what?! I mean, the other Devourers we have seen were completely free by the looks of it... or were they? Well they are rare. My theory is that they were previously hunted down by something else. This something, or someone, then bound the rest with magic and using them to hunt down his enemies. Of course, we are the something's enemy. I mean, we are trying to do good things, not evil things like most creatures in Gavel. So these are assassins. But how did the other one escape? Well, the spell broke. I'm not sure about anything else. Since I have fairly limited time right now, I'll look into how they escaped and what they escaped from later.

Theory B - Magic Resistance of the Devourers: Now that I have found the Timestone Cave, which is very close to the Devourer Pit, I can understand them even more. The Timestone seems to be a powerful artefact, though I have no idea what it does. Except that, because of its shape (sand timer), then I assume that it is partially responsible for the petrified adventurers. But why aren't the Devourers affected by it? Well, that's the theory. I believe that the Devourers, just like many of Gavel's creatures, are highly capable in magic. Or at least, they are highly resistant. However, they have been affected. Unlike the petrified adventurers, they aren't frozen in stone. But they can move very little. I'm assuming that the Devourer in the pit is an outcast from these, though I don't know why yet. I assume that the earth element references this magic. But this would mean that the air element would counteract them. Interestingly, Medusa has been near to the Timestone too and she has the same elemental resistance and weakness setup, though she also has earth damage.

Theory C - The Origin of the Devourers: I am now completely certain that the Devourers are attracted to the Timestone. Not only that, but they seem to be guardians of it. This means that they aren't savage creatures like we see in the Dark Forest or the Devourer Pit, as these are slaves or outcasts. The ones in the Timestone Cave are just territorial and want to defend the Timestone, which they protect to stop people like Medusa. Did that work? No, because Medusa DID tap into the Timestone. Not only that, but the person who enslaved them. I mean, why else would he want the Devourers exterminated AND enslave them? The Devourer race isn't like the ones we see in the Dark Forest. No, these were mutated for the sorcerer's own ends. And since they are a pretty evil sorcerer, or maybe were, then of course they would have tapped into the Timestone. But what happened once they did that?

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So there you have it: all I know so far about the Devourers. Of course, you can contribute to this thread if you want to (and, like I did above, I will credit you).

To be fair, a lot of the time we're dicks cause we kill the cows we're supposed to bring back and many other things besides, a lot of people took the bribe in an iron heart part 2 (mostly accidentally), in a fantastic voyage you crash the ship, etc.

Plus we steal from banks... but hey, overall we do good things. In fact, we certainly have a lot of things out to kill us, like whatever enslaved the Devourers.
Yeah, they seem to be like a miniboss, except they don't give a big drop of emeralds like minibosses. I've seen other mobs like this in Gavel, like an orc mob which is level 50 and in the level 40 plains.

Looks nice, but I don't think there's anything to be derived from a mob's elemental weaknesses/defenses that isn't too far fetched. Remember that elements are just a gameplay mechanic.

Well, I've got to think why they have earth resistance and air weakness. I mean, things like magma cubes have fire damage and resistance and water weakness for good reasons. So do lots of mobs.
I'm only doing this one because I really like the Devourer. I may do more if I find something as interesting. Still have to find out more for this one though... I guess I'll do that now!

Update! I added the Timestone Cave AND completed theory B. More coming 'soon' (unless I can't find more on the Devourers, which I think won't happen for a while. There seem to be quite a few in the Pre-Light forest now that I've had a look around).

Another update! Added a profile on Medusa, which just shows us the bad things about tapping into the magic of the Timestone. Seriously, this thing should not be messed with.

I don't think it would be, since the Main Storyline (which I'm almost certain the Time Door is related to) doesn't really have anything to do with Gavel.
Dullahan. I briefly considered that, but I'm now against that idea. I'm going to update the theories soon, because I came up with a ideas about the Devourer race.

I have not been able to see these beasts in person, but I am interested in what you are saying...

What I am hearing is that there is a black and purple mysterious creature found in one province but not the other. They are highly mysterious and and attracted to a powerful time controlling stone...
    ________________________________
Well. Just looking at them screams endermen. Not exactly endermen, but rather, the Ancients.

Similarities. Black and purple, mysterious, only found in one province. And they are ancient, yet still alive. Time magic perhaps? Could the ancients be controlling the devourerers?
