Since Mages are very dependant of their spells, I recommend mana.

The one thing you must have as a mage is water. Other than that, it's up to you. I use fire and water for several reasons. First, earth lowers mana and spell related things and is more based towards normal attacks. This is fine if you have good mana steal though. Second, air and thunder aren't appropriate for me because mage isn't really meant to be very randomised in any areas and also isn't meant to attack quickly. Finally, I chose fire because mage needs that extra defence, health, regeneration and life steal to make sure it doesn't die. A support class is meant to be protected while helping others a lot but they have to defend themselves sometimes. Then there is the fact that fire-related items can give explosions, which gives an interesting advantage in battle.

I mainly made mine to fit the gear I had in my enderchest. So I'm currently a lil bit of everything but specializing in water (for my ethereal) and going with what I call a 'bard' build.

Lots of intelligence with a bit of strength and defence. No agility or dexterity.

Intelligence allows for more spell casting and increases heal power and ice snake damage.
Strength boosts all damage, with an extra damage increase for meteor (cause it deals earth damage).
Defence reduces damage taken and increases meteor damage.

Yeah, it kinda sucks now that it doesn't properly freeze enemies but intelligence is still good for boosting heal power and reducing spell cost.

My favorite build is what I call the "red mage" (Final Fantasy Reference). At level 100 you should have 48 strength, 80 intelligence, and 70 defense.

Intelligence because I need mana, duh? x3
Defense and agility so I'll be harder to kill cx (And I like to run fast!)

Ehh... I don't like high strength all that much, earth weapons tend to be my least favorite in terms of attack speed and stats, so I keep strength moderate and focus on intelligence and defense.

Both strength and dexterity increase damage but strength actually affects a mage skill.

By the way, people gotta stop calling dexterity thunder.

I've got a lot in int. About 10 less of that in in def. and a few extras in Atk.
So basically a water-fire build which I've been happily calling a steam Mage like a dork. :P

if you guys ask me, they should change the ice snake move, or fire - water around i wish fire was intelligence and water defense, because honestly, im putting 100 skill points into intelligance because of aquarius chestplate op, and then if i could do more damage with meteor would be nice, or if they buffed or fixxed or changed ice snake that would also be acceptable :P if u ask me at lvl 100 use 1 le because u should have around a stack then 100 intelligance, 25 into fire and 25 into water, im not doing this but its good, im doing my stats so im able to wear zodiac and hive armour :P dont judge.

    Strength + intelligence + agility

    With the most intelligence.

    intelligence explaination:
More intelligence means: More power, more movement and more heals
This is basically a no-brainer for the mage.

    Strength explaination:
Strength makes your attacks do more damage, but that isn't the reason I chose it above dexterity.
I chose Strength above dexterity because of one pretty huge thing: DOT (aka: damage over time.)
The bad part about the all-powerfull earth weapons is that they're slow, even though their dps is ~the same as thunderweapons of those same levels.
What makes up for this slowness is the fact that there are status effects in the game that use DOT to attack enemies such as poison.
This makes that less bad, but it's also just plain cool to fight enemies with your slow-mo weapon.
I've done some actual DPS thinking too. The DPS is supposed to be the same as dexterity but since you fire a 'fully charged' shot at the beginning of the fight you have that extra bit of damage before the DPS counter really begins.

    agility explaination:
Now strength and intelligence you see quite a bit more than agility on a mage build, you'd expect a mage build to have defense, right?
This is because of the armor that comes with the elements, defense has fire as an element and fire armor genially makes you slower, unlike agility armor which makes you faster. I also believe that the 'stealing' identification is considered more of an air identification, that identification goes great with the DOT I already have.
