The Player (you) Isn't Such A Hero

Bravo. This is a wonderful thread that's not annoyingly far fetched or anything. Can't wait for the other 2 parts. But for the parts about craftmas chaos, well there's a line saying you shouldn't mess with the timeline as it could have huge consequences, so it could be the player is trying to go for the greater good, as keeping the crystal could've turned you, a power adventurer, into something along the lines of the corrupter of worlds. So, it could've been they were playing it safe, to protect the rest of the province instead of just Selchar. Also, with all the time travel, it could be something like you've changed the future to an alternate one, which is technically possible.
Santa's chat:

• Santa: Ho ho ho! Well if it isn't my friend who just took a journey through time!
• Santa: But of course, I already know you were successful, Selchar has had presents for the last 30 years thanks to you!
• Santa: Although, I would have expected you sooner, I saw something strange and dark in the fire when I expected you to return.
• Santa: Of course, no one in Selchar will know you saved christmas, because for them, no one has missed one! Of course I remember what you did, power of christmas and all, ho.
• Santa: So, what took you? Oh, 60 years you say? I wonder how that happened. Well, not even I can claim to know the future, my guess is having that dark crystal with you while travelling in time caused you to over shoot.
• Santa: Don' tell anyone what you saw though, knowing the future can be dangerous, Ho ho! If this journey has taught us anything, its that time is a confusing thing, and nothing is set in stone. I don't like to mess around with it too much.
• Santa: Anyway, I wouldn't want you to keep the crystal with you forever if its truly as powerful as it seems, give it to me, and I'll store it safely.
• Santa: That is some seriously dark magic we've encountered on this journey, and I'm sure it won't be the last encounter in your adventure.
• Santa: Here, take this early christmas present from me. It's one of my very own magically infused hats.
• Santa: Ho ho ho! Now take care in your journey and Merry Christmas! Say hi to Tom for me if you can!

 

Well honestly the best thing would have been to drop it in lava. This is done in Wynnexacavation D to what's quoted a containing "some of the most concentrated magical power" so then the shard could have also have been destroyed the same way.

 

Yet to come... I think a certain GM has already tipped that cap at that

Well, I don't know if anyone has already mentioned this, but the quest where you have to kill Chuckles is a good example. When the NPC says "Take care of him" the player kills Chuckles. We can ask a few questions.

Did "the player" kill Chuckles intentionally?

Or did he take "Take care of him" the wrong way?

 

There was lava in Future Selchar and a magical fireplace right next to Santa. I just saying that it would have been the best thing to do and that the destruction of items imbued with corrupted powers like the Insanity Clock and the crystal from Wynnexcavation D.

It does call into question the morality of "the player". Was this an honest mistake or does "the player" take it the wrong because this is his way of thinking? Thanks for bringing it up :)

By the way are there any official sources I could use? Where can I find the official lore and stuff? While the Wiki is useful I don't want to quote it on story-related stuff unless I have to.

Dont forget you crush Bob's soul with a blacksmith, then kill his spirit in Heaven of all places, kill guard golems in Almuj Emerald Stash, and you leave behind (what's his name) in the Lost in the Jungle quest instead of bringing him with you (or at least stay back and wait for him)

In most video games of this style, the player doesn't speak and/or doesn't have dialogue. Examples: Pokémon, Legend of Zelda, etc.
He usually just does anything he/she is asked because he/she is supposed to be a hero and isn't supposed to disappoint people. But this is a very, very well thought out theory.

 

I might have something to add to this theory. Many people won't agree with this but it's my opinion so yeah.

So you said that the player isn't a hero all the time and I agree with that but I might be able to explain why he does that. It might not just be greed or strive for money.

You said prison story was an example but is the most minor example. But as it you get into an higher level there are more clear examples. It's because his corrupted mind taking over.

So when you get to the caravan driver he says to go to Ragni and that their are some monster up ahead but to be more specific corrupted monsters. He as you stated he kills these corrupted monsters mindlessly. Now to the real part.

The player always kills these corrupted monsters a lot and might not know the dangers. The corruption could spread to the player meaning some times he switches personalities into a greedy and corrupted person. This explains why the prison story was the most minor example because the quest is for an early level and that the player has just entered a land of corruption and started killing a few corrupted monsters. Meaning his mind is just a little bit corrupted.

As you move on to higher levels the player has experience with killing these corrupted monsters and has been killing a lot. Meaning his mind has gotten more Corrupted. An example of a higher level quest and more greed/corruption. Is Jungle Fever where he breaks his trust with that almuj guy and then taking 64 LE to the guy and getting a MASSIVE SHARE. Taking A more risky task with more emeralds means that his mind has gotten corrupted.

So to sum it ups the player killing these corrupted monsters might mean that the corruption could spread to him making him into a more greedy selfish person sometimes

But remember this is only a theory please don't start hating if you don't agree with this

@DarkDemonDragon here are a few screenshots from two quests in Gavel.
The quest in the first photo is called Star Thief. Basically, a somewhat 'insane' person asks you to get his 'star of transcendance' that is obviously messing up his house and him from a thief. When you confront the thief, the thief has already mutated into some kind of crazy monster. Even though you have seen the effects of the star, you, the player, still give it to Trunan despite knowing fully what it can do. In fact, you can see him going absoloutely bonkers at the end of the quest.

The quest in the second photo is called Heart of Llevigar. Basically, Llevigar's power plant is running out of juice, and it's up to you to save it. Or is it? As you can see from the dialouge, Zenam obviously did not expect you, let alone a human. I do believe that the player either had good intentions and wanted to help Llevigar, or the more greedy intention. Zenam says that they are paying a fortune to fix the issue. See? The player might've been attracted to the fact that they were giving a large sum of emeralds to the expert, and so, the player decided to pretend that he is the expert, despite being not.

 

I really think it's this. In the master piece quest you lie about what you've seen because you don't recognize the actual legendary mobs as legendary.

The thing is think about the quests and dungeons. Like Grian and Salted said in the Gavel Release video some quest aren't about killing and some don't need you to kill a single mob. Instead, "the player" is forced to solve puzzles and mysteries that no idiot could figure out. While "oh he's just stupid" may work for maybe the first several quests or so, the player is well versed in puzzle solving and mysteries and is very experienced at dealing with people by Lv 45 as all 4 dungeons have been completed by this time and by Lv 60 the player is a veteran having travelled through all of Wynn and a significant portion of Gavel. By this point "He's an idiot" just doesn't apply.

 

Killing the chicken cluck cluck? Killing the cows in "the shadow of e beast". The player just kills for sport.

 

What about killing the farmer's cows in "Shadow of the Beast" or, as mentioned before Cluckles?

On the topic of Cluckles, what about Baab and Mooington in "Reincarnation?" Sure, you're tasked to bring items from each of them, but did you really have to kill them?

In "An Iron Heart Part II" you're given a choice to tell the authorities or to stay silent.

And for a lot of quests, you were never asked for help, you just do it. (Even when you have a lack of knowledge in a certain field in "Heart of Llevigar" as previously mentioned.)
Motivated by good will or greed?

 

A lot of people are seeming to forget, that the game itself doesn't make you to be a hero, yer a soldier doing heroic things. In Gavel, there's a quest where you murder 3 cows due to your stupidity, you can be greedy to both the elves and take the Golem Factory's bribe. There's even a quest where you escape from prison! The point being, you are literally a human doing normal human things. With other humans, doing normal human things.
