Is just me or did I first think of the WynnExcavation?
We never know really why they were made or what makes them really tick...
The mystery grows because we do not know why they were started.
It is a idea of (from what we know) linking the crystals together, and its linked with the project of (as we know atm) to get the 4 crystals.
